A disturbing trend has started to materialize at Costco (NASDAQ: COST) that should give current and prospective investors pause.In both the latest quarter and the most recent few months, same-store sales at the nation’s second-largest retailer have been either negative or flat.
Before considering selling your stock, however, there are two things to keep in mind.

The three months ended May 10, 2015, serve as a case in point when it comes to Costco’s recent performance.Over the 12-week period, sales at Costco locations that have been open at least a year were down by 1% compared to the same stretch in 2014.
The company was hit particularly hard in its international division, where year-over-year comparable sales dropped by 6%. Domestic sales, by contrast, were up by 1%.

Despite the disappointing drop in comparable sales, investors should understand what’s at play before making a decision about whether to buy or, more likely, to sell Costco’s stock.That is, Costco’s sales have suffered from changes in the currency markets as well as the recent drop in oil prices.

The growing strength of the U.S. dollar means that sales in Costco’s international division aren’t worth as much after they are converted from the local currency.(5)
In short, the drop in Costco’s same-store sales is much ado about nothing.Foreign currencies fluctuate; there’s nothing Costco can do about that.
Not to mention, they’re bound to swing the other way at some point in the future.
