■今週のジョーク「観念しました」(The swearing parrot)
There’s a guy who owns a parrot that swears like a sailor. He can swear for five minutes straight without repeating himself.
船乗りのように罵るオウムを飼っている男性がいました。そのオウムは同じことを繰り返して言わずに、5分間ずっと続けて罵ることができます。
Trouble is, the guy who owns him is a quiet, conservative type, and this bird’s foul mouth is driving him crazy.
One day, it gets to be too much. The guy grabs the bird by the throat, shakes him hard and yells, “QUIT IT!”
問題は、オウムを所有している男性が寡黙で、保守的なタイプであるということ。この鳥の口の悪さに男性は怒り心頭。
ある日、度を越したため、男性はオウムの喉元をつかみ、ゆすって、怒鳴りました。「静かにしろ！」
But this just makes the bird mad and he swears more than ever. Then the guy gets mad and says, “OK for you.” He locks the bird in a kitchen cabinet.
しかし、この行為はただオウムを怒らせ、オウムは今まで以上にもっと罵るようになりました。
そうすると、男性は怒り狂い、「君がそういう態度ならわかったよ」と行って、キッチンの戸棚にオウムを閉じ込めました。
This really aggravates the bird and he claws and scratches, and when the guy finally lets him out, the bird cuts loose with a stream of vulgarities that would make a veteran sailor blush.
この罰は本当にオウムをさらに悪化させます。オウムは爪を引っかきまわします。そして、男性がついにオウムを外に出したとき、オウムはベテラン船乗りを赤面させるような下品な言葉を連続的に放ち、羽目を外しました。
At this point, the guy is so mad that he throws the bird into the freezer.
この時、男性はオウムを冷蔵庫の中に投げいるほど、怒り狂いました。
For the first few seconds there is a terrible din. The bird kicks and claws and thrashes. Then it suddenly gets very, very quiet.
最初の数秒間は、オウムが蹴ったり、引っ掻いたり、のたうちまわるなど、うるさく騒ぎました。しかしそれから、突然とても静かになりました。
At first the guy just waits, but then he starts to think that the bird may be hurt. After a couple of minutes of silence, he’s worried enough to open the freezer door.
最初、ただ待ちましたが、オウムが怪我をしたのではないかと思い始めます。数分間の沈黙のあと、彼は冷蔵庫のドアを開けるには十分なほど心配しました。
The bird calmly climbs onto the man’s outstretched arm and says, “Awfully sorry about the trouble I gave you. I’ll do my best to improve my vocabulary from now on.”
オウムは男性の腕に静かによじ登り、こう話しました。「私があなたにしたこと、本当にごめんなさい。これから、自分の言葉使いをもっと改善するよう最善を尽くします」
The man is astounded. He can’t understand the transformation that has come over the parrot.
Then the parrot says, “By the way, what did that chicken ever do to you?”
男性はとても驚きました。彼はオウムの変貌ぶりが理解できませんでした。
すると、オウムはこう言いました。「ところで、（あの冷蔵庫に入ってた）チキンはあなたにどんな悪さをしたの？」

昔の悪ガキの定番は「反省しなさい！」と蟄居(ちっきょ)命ぜられた押入で、懐中電灯を頼りに漫画を読むというものでした。何事も正否を決めるのは事前の準備であることを、そうやって学んだものです。でも、その押入の中に、同じくらいの年頃の子供が「チキン」となって パック詰めにされていたら、さすがに震え上がるでしょうね。「次は僕の番だ…」って。
