【１】 Speak! （その８６）
★その８６ At the bottom is 一番下にあるのが・・・★
もちろん、場所を表す倒置です。次にあるのが・・・で、一番上が・・・
です。のような解説をするときに使いやすいです。存在を表す動詞と
一緒に覚えましょう。beのほかに、lieとかstandとかあります。
●例１
At the bottom is labor force.
最下層にいるのが労働力です。
●例２
At the top of the pyramid stands the president.
ピラミッドの最上位にいるのが社長です。

この表をみると、最下層に位置するのが、ある民族になるのが
わかります。さて、誰でしょうか。
If you look at this chart, you see that at the bottom
lies a certain ethnic group. Who are they?

【２】 Speaking演習(independent task)
今回のお題は次！
Some people like to eat most of their meals with other people.
Others prefer eating most of their meals alone. Which do you
prefer and why?
【opinion】

こんな感じでメモをとって、次のように言いました。
In response to my eating habit, I prefer eating my
meals alone. That way I can concentrate on my food
and enjoy it. You can taste anything including a salad, beer,
a stew and sushi to your heart’s content if you taste them
carefully. Besides it only takes five to ten minutes to finish
lunch or dinner. Why can’t you wait until your meal is over?
I actually hate talking while eating. The other day I was
eating lunch with my friends and they asked me for some
advice on TOEFL, but I couldn’t write anything and besides,
they were not listening carefully. So my advice was
meaningless. I would rather eat alone, then. (114 words)
言うときのポイントをまとめました。
■becauseではなくてthat wayとする
■anythingとしたら、すぐに具体例
■Secondではなくて、Besidesとする
■疑問文を入れる
■the other dayとしてエピソード
そのへんを意識すると形式は大丈夫だと思います。うえの例は、今自分で言って
みたら、そういうのができたというだけで、全く吟味してません。吟味し始めると
またすごい英文になってしまうので、これで十分だとしておきましょう。大切なのは
１００ワードを超えているということだけです。

前回の号でお知らせしていたお題は、こちらでした。
Some people study a foreign language in a country
in which it is spoken. Other people study
a foreign language in their native countries.
Which approach is better?
この問題を考えてみましょう。
まずは、このように考えてみた！という人がいるとしましょう。（たぶん、あなたも？）

★I think it is better to learn a foreign language
in a country in which it is spoken for the following two reasons.
★First, you can learn more English expressions in the U.S.

もちろん、これをフレームとして、detailを埋めていこう、というわけですよね。

that pays well or work that is enjoyable?

【４】 英語の構文（その９６）
【構文９６ 挿入】
●例文
This is due not least to its striking appearance
― it is over 2 meters in height and made entirely of
white marble.
●日本語訳
これは特にその素晴らしい外見によるものだ。高さ２メートルで、
全体が白い大理石で作られているのだから。
●解説
挿入の例が２つあります。ひとつはdue to～のせい、の間に
due not least toと「特に」を表すnot leastが挿入され
ています。
同様にmade ofの間にmade entirely ofとentirelyが
挿入されています。
このように、due toなどの決まり文句の間に挿入するという
カタチも普通にあるのでdueで切るのではなく、dueがきたら
toが出てくるまで我慢して読みすすめることが大切です。
【５】 TOEFLのエッセンス 第２回
今回は、リスニング中のノートテーキングについて、
一言述べています。
Learners don’t know how to take notes
in the listening section. Here is one tip.
You are not taking notes in the listening section.
You are trying to remember things and to make it easier
to do the job. If you just listen, your memory will
easily fade away, which everyone has noticed.
However, you jot it down in whatever manner you can,
your memory will stay a bit longer.
(Only a bit, but still, long enough to answer
the questions that follow in a minute.)
If you keep that in mind, there are quite a few ways
to make it happen. You can draw a picture,
you can draw a line, you can draw a diagram,
or you can just make a circle or a square,
knowing what they mean. Note-taking in the TOEFL
listening section is not for your later use, but
for strengthening your memory. Have you ever
read your notes before answering the questions?
Only a couple of times. It is exactly because your notes
are not the kind of “notes” you need for the term exams.
Now hold your pencil and draw something while you listen.
You will find your memory is somewhat strengthened.

説明していますので、オリジナルの英文を読みながら、問題に
答えるように、読み進めていってくださいね。いくつかにわけています
ので、そのパートごとに、繰り返して数回読んでみると、よくわかると
思います。単語は今回１４５個をピックアップしてあります。

You had more than two mice in one group and
you let them live as they usually do, but you had a
limited number of mice in the other group, thus isolating them
from their society. This division was made based on the
assumption that mice are just as social as human beings.

【８】 編集後記
今日はTOEFLでしたね。受験だった人はおつかれさまでした。
昨日のブログの予測は・・・はずれですよね、きっと笑。これにも
めげず、次回も予測します！
なんの根拠もない予測だけど。
今回からlisteningとspeakingをintegrateした練習
コーナーを設けました。なかなかよいプログラムなので、わたしと
気軽にしゃべる感じで、正解を答えてください。よい練習になります。
年末あと２ヶ月です。年末までの目標は達成できそうでしょうか。
だんだん厳しくなってきますが、最後まであきらめることなく、残り
少なくなっても、やることは基本しかありません。英語には応用は
なくて、全てが基本です。基本的なことの繰り返しだけが、信じられ
ないような高度な技術を可能にするものです。やってることは基本だけ。
知らない人だけがすごいと思う。
まだ２ヶ月ある。基本を繰り返して、徹底した基本動作を習得
してくださいね。
