今週のジョーク「やる気出た」

Little Tommy was doing very badly in math. His parents had tried everything; tutors, flash cards, special learning centers, in short, everything they could think of. Finally in a last ditch effort, they took Tommy down and enrolled him in the local Catholic School.
トミー少年は、まったく算数ができない子だった。トミーの両親はありとあらゆる努力をした。家庭教師、フラッシュカード、特別学習センターと、思いつく限りのことを試した。もはや万策尽きたところで、両親はトミーを地方のカトリック学校に入学させることにした。
After the first day, little Tommy comes home with a very serious look on his face. He doesn’t kiss his mother hello. Instead, he goes
straight to his room & starts studying. Books & papers are spread out all over the room and little Tommy is hard at work. His mother is amazed. She calls him down to dinner and to her shock, the minute he is done he marches back to his room without a word and in no time he is back hitting the books as hard as before. This goes on for sometime, day after day while the mother tries to understand what made all the difference.
初日が終わって家に帰ってきたトミーは、ひどくシリアスな表情をしていた。母親に挨拶のキスもせずに、まっすぐ部屋に向かい、勉強を始めた。部屋じゅうに書物とノートが散らかして、トミーは猛勉強をした。母親はびっくりした。母親がトミーを夕飯に呼ぶと、驚いたことに、食事を終えるやいなや、彼は一言も喋らず部屋へと行進していき、すぐまたさっきまでと同じように猛勉強を始めたのだ。来る日も来る日もそれが続いた。母親は、何が彼を変えたのか知りたかった。
Finally, little Tommy brings home his report card. He quietly lays it on the table and goes up to his room and hits the books. With great trepidation, his mom looks at it and to her surprise, little Tommy got an A in math. She can no longer hold her curiosity. She goes to his room and says: “Son, what was it? Was it the nuns?”
ついにある日、トミー少年は成績表を持ち帰った。彼は成績表をそっとテーブルの上に置くと、部屋に行き猛勉強を始めた。すごく不安な気持ちで、母親は成績表を見た。驚いたことに、トミー少年の算数の成績はAだった。母親はもはや好奇心を抑えることができなくなり、トミーの部屋に行くと、こう言った。「トミー、何があったの？（修道女の）先生のおかげなの？」
Little Tommy looks at her and shakes his head “No”.
トミー少年は母親を見て首を横に振った。「ちがうよ」
“Well then”, she replies, “was it the books, the discipline, the structure, the uniforms, WHAT was it?”.
「じゃあ」母親は言った。「教科書が良かったの？規律？体制？制服？何だったの？」
Little Tommy looks at her and says, “Well, on the first day of school, when I saw that guy nailed to the plus sign, I knew they weren’t fooling around”.
トミー少年は母親を見てこう言った。「えっとね、僕、初登校の日に、プラス（+）のマークに貼り付けられているやつを見たんだよ。それで、先生たちが冗談を言ってるんじゃないってわかったんだ。」
